Job Purpose:

The Senior Aviation Wellbeing Specialist role reports directly to the Chief Medical Officer and will be responsible for cultivating a positive organisational climate to achieve overall employee aviation wellness through targeted wellness interventions thus contributing to a healthy and productive working environment.

The incumbent of this role is responsible for coordinating and implementing a comprehensive health risk management program. The role provide consultation, expertise and technical advice on aviation and travel medicine, employee wellness, absenteeism management and on-board medically related matters in a manner that ensures adherence to quality assurance and patient care principles.

The role requires participation in the development, implementation and to define policies, procedures and protocols as well as adherence to relevant legislation and consideration of international standards and recommended practices of a holistic employee wellness programme for SAA.

The role also plans, promotes and maintains comprehensive and integrated wellness programs and services for employees, families, and retired staff; providing services combining prevention/intervention/treatment, physical/mental health and fitness; and promoting a healthy lifestyles model.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Design the Employee Wellness Strategy taking into account specialist expertise, best practice, benchmarking and market standards, etc.
  • Manage the implementation of the Employee Wellness strategy.
  • Drive continuous optimisation programmes & initiatives for the Employee Wellness function.
  • Promote healthy lifestyle habits and activities through development and implementation of wellness programs that optimise employee health and productivity.
  • Develop employee wellbeing programs to support SAA as being an Employer of Choice.
  • Design key employee wellbeing strategies and frameworks in alignment with research, SAA’s corporate plan and legislative requirements.
  • Develop policies, procedures, guidelines and related mechanisms to support the effective execution of the wellness approach.
  • Conduct a needs analysis of the various stakeholders for the purpose of developing wellness programs.
  • Conduct a detailed analysis of the current state of employee wellness in SAA and develop a report of recommendations.
  • Conduct health and wellness presentations for employees, families, and retirees for the purpose of improving employee awareness and participation in wellness programs.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors and contractual labour for the purpose of providing health promotion services and training.
  • Develop programs and services for the purpose of promoting employee and family wellness.
  • Establish working environment with site and community personnel for the purpose of developing and providing appropriate wellness promotion efforts.
  • Prepare a wide variety of written materials for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
  • Research a wide variety of topics for the purpose of providing information, recommendations and/or addressing a variety of administrative requirements.
  • Manage the intervention process, address personal & personnel problems affecting work performance, behaviour, absenteeism, achievement of potential & incapacity status.
  • Manage the risk to the business from a wellness perspective through continuous internal and external monitoring of business impact, as well as changes in stakeholder needs.
  • Provide consultation services to stakeholders on employee wellbeing initiatives.
  • Complete regular and ad hoc reporting on the progress and success of employee wellbeing programs and present results and recommendations to management.
  • Share employee wellbeing program performance with key internal and external stakeholders to demonstrate the impact that change will bring to the bottom line within the division and the organisation as a whole.

Provide auxiliary support related to Medical Programmes and Services when applicable:

  • Provide ongoing support and expertise through participation in comprehensive assessment, planning, implementation and overall evaluation of medical programs.
  • As far as practicable, adhere to preventative medicine and evidence based medicine principles in the approach to medical program implementation.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff in promoting effective and efficient utilization of clinical resources.
  • Execute physical examination programs to maintain compliance with aviation medicine, occupational medicine and travel medicine legislation and guidance material.
  • Optimise continued medical certification for licensed aviation personnel by conducting medical examinations, communicating with relevant medical specialists, and/or preparing case presentations to determine fitness for flying duties and aviation services.
  • Conduct medical reservation medical record review using approved specific indicators, criteria and other relevant guidance material.
  • Prepare for, participate in and provide advice in committees, meetings and other forums that discuss medical matters that impact on employee health and wellbeing.
  • Facilitate a multidisciplinary approach to medical case reviews and/or preparation.
  • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of medical programs, and submit proposals for continuous improvement.
  • Identify potential medically related risks within the company from experience, historical data, trends, workplace analysis, and other information sources.
  • Liaise with relevant institutions, societies and agencies in matters related to developing and implementing policies, procedures and preparing directives on aviation medicine, travel medicine, and occupational medicine.
  • Advise and educate workers and managers about medical risks in the workplace and their impact on health and productivity.
  • Maintain a healthy and safe place to work by complying to standards and regulations.
  • Monitor change management processes by applying change management methodology to reduce resistance to change, optimise buy-in and eliminate any barriers to change for new employee wellbeing programmes.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Medical Degree with post graduate Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Aerospace Medicine or Diploma in Occupational Medicine.
  • Certificate in Primary Aviation Medicine.
  • Registration with South African Health Professions Council, with the Certificate of good standing with the council.
  • Registration with SACAA as Senior AME.
  • Registration with a medical insurance provider.
  • Certificate in Travel Medicine will be an advantage.
  • A minimum 6 – 8 years’ experience in Employee Wellness.
  • Employee counselling skills and experience.
  • Experience in Aviation Medicine.
  • Experience in occupational health, corporate wellness, disability management and worker’s compensation.
  • Experience in an Airline Company will be an advantage.
  • Experience and knowledge in Aviation Regulatory Company will be an advantage.
  • Experience in co-ordinating employee wellbeing programmes and services.
