Fire Fighter Learnership

Fire Fighter Learnership Candidates will only be appointed to a permanent Learner Fire Fighter job after successfully completing the required training program.

Requirements:

• Grade 12 proficiency (Mathematics and Physical Science preferred).
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Must not have a fear of heights or confined spaces.
• Must be in good physical and mental health.
• Must be able to work well with others and handle pressure.
• Must not have a criminal record.
• Must successfully complete the Firefighter INFPA 1001, Hazmat Awareness NFPA 1072, Hazmat Operations NFPA 1072, and First Aid Level 3 courses offered by the educational facility.

Important Performance Areas

NOTE: The following mandatory fitness test must be completed and passed by all candidates who have been shortlisted.

• Reaching test (1.9 m).
• 2.4 km run (Males 11 minutes and Females 13 minutes).
• The push-up (30 in 60 seconds).
• Sitting up (30 in 60 seconds).
• Carries dead loads (2 x 25 kg drums over a distance of 100 m).

NOTE: Candidates who succeed in the physical examination

• Submit their fingerprints or identifying numbers to be checked for criminal records; be required to pass a written exam and an interview. Other criminal background checks won’t be accepted
  You must submit to a City medical examination.
• Must pass a claustrophobia and acrophobia (fear of heights and tight places) test.
• must submit to a mandatory drug test at a City testing facility.

Special requirements for the position:

• Non-permanent contract position for the period of training.
• Required to put on a uniform and safety gear.
