Transnet: Fire Fighter Learnership 2022 / 2023
Provide protection over life, property and the environment by responding to fire and emergency situations, conduct fire prevention duties, up keep and servicing of fire equipment.
Position outputs:
- Maintain Operational Readiness.
- Maintenance of fire equipment.
- Perform specialized procedures in dealing with emergency and other incidents.
- Adherence to Governance and Risk Management in terms of legislation, policies and procedures.
- Adhere to Transnet policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Caring for other people’s lives and / or assets without any favor and / or prejudice.
- Continuous assessment of own performance, professional interaction and ethical dealings with stakeholders/ clients and co-workers.
- Perform fire patrols after hours.
- Inspection of dangerous goods/freight stationed in marshalling yards.
- Fire and equipment inspection of cargo sheds, warehouse and other structures.
- Fire protection duties or cargo, chemical tankers and explosives.
- Commands incident site until arrival of higher authority.
- Handling of all HAZMAT and fire equipment.
- Man the fire control room.
- Man fire equipment on board tugs during vessel incidents.
- Standby and inspection of hot work sites.
- Inspection and testing of fire detection, fire suppression and sprinkler systems.
- Grain elevator inspections( threat of dust explosions).
- Hot work inspection on vessels, rail network and depot construction sites.
- Perform any other functions as directed by a person with authority.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Grade 12.
- Fire Fighter 1 ( SAQA/ IFSAC- International Fire Safety.
Accreditation Congress) Accredited
- Hazmat Awareness (SAQA/IFSC accredited).
- Fire Fighter 2 ( SAQA/ IFSAC- Accredited).
- Hazmat Operational ( SAQA/IFSC accredited).
- First Aid ( Level3) or Basic Ambulance Assistant certificate.
- Be in possession of a valid drivers license (minimum C1) with PrDP.
Work experience
- None (entry level).

- Knowledge of Port/ Rail services operations.
- Knowledge of hazardous substance labels.
- Fire engineering Science.

- Hazmat awareness( dangerous goods).
- Knowledge of corporate standard / instructions.
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety.
- Knowledge of Harbour regulations/ Port rules.
- Fire Brigade Services Act 99 of 1987.
- Basic knowledge of SANS codes of practices : SANS 10090; SANS 10400; SANS 10087; SANS 10089; SANS 3000.
